About

Poipu Mobile MD was established in 2015 by Dr. J. Wayne Burris as a mobile concierge urgent care service, based in Poipu, but serving the entire island of Kauai.  Hospitality, transparency, and convenience are at the heart of the medical care we provide.  In 2021 the practice grew into its current clinic location in the heart of Poipu offering walk-in urgent care services 7 days a week.  The staff decided to keep the name – Poipu Mobile MD – because many of our patients know us by our stellar medical care, convenience, and little yellow Smart car.  And we still do house calls.  Whether we see you at your home, or ours, you’ll be sure to have, as one patient said, “the best medical experience ever.”

J. Wayne Burris, MD, MPH, FACEP

MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Dr. Burris is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians with experience providing care in emergency rooms in California and Hawaii since 2004.  He attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill and completed his residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center & Children’s Hospital.

While working in all three emergency rooms on Kauai, Dr. Burris found that he treated numerous patients with minor illnesses or injuries that could have easily and safely been cared for outside the ER.  Patients spend valuable vacation time driving to hospitals and sitting in waiting rooms, seeking help for their minor medical needs, often ending up with enormous bills.  Recognizing the need for a better alternative, Poipu Mobile MD was born in 2015.  Dr. Burris seeks to help people with their basic urgent care needs while sheltering them from the expense and stress of a trip to the ER.

When Dr. Burris is not treating patients you can find him surfing at his favorite breaks in Poipu, running in preparation for the next The Kauai Marathon, or spending time with his wife and children.

Dr. Warren Sparks

PHYSICIAN

Dr. Sparks is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine and Family Practice Physician with a wealth of experience practicing medicine all over the world in various settings.  He attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern.  He served as medical school faculty at the University of New Mexico and University of Colorado, and taught emergency medicine in New Zealand.

During the Vietnam War, Dr. Sparks was a USAF flight surgeon.  He has experience in aerospace, hyperbaric, and wilderness medicine.  He served as the expedition doctor for the American Men and Women on Everest in 1983, has worked on international air ambulances and at Native American tribal clinics.  His experience also includes positions as a hospitalist, palliative care, and emergency medicine physician.

When Dr. Sparks is not treating patients, you can find him spending time with his wife and children, playing the ukulele, and practicing the hula (it could use some improvement).
